Artist Spotlight Log 4+5 – alan

Even as amazing and talented a vocalist as alan is, she seemed to appear out of nowhere when she suddenly set foot in Japan in late 2007. Unlike many new artists, alan’s look and feel where established from the start. Her name is displayed in a lovley scripted font and all of her singles feature two covers, usually each shares a similar pose with alan’s eyes open on one and closed on the other.

Originally from China, alan began singing at a young age as her mother was a singer as well. She attended a prestigious art academy in Beijing where she double majored in vocal music and playing the er-hu. In 2005 she released her first Chinese album Sheng Sheng Zui Ru Lan, which was a cover album of other C-Pop artists. In 2006 she caught the eye of Avex when they held auditions throughout Chinese cities that year. Then 2007 she became the first Chinese artist to join the Avex Trax label, and then she moved to Tokyo, Japan to pursue a career in J-Pop.

The digital single “Shiawase no Kane / Ai Jui Shi Shou” was released in May 2008 and all profits from the songs were donated to the Red Cross to help the victims of the Sichuan Earthquake.

Of note is her “Five Elemental Singles” Campaign, in which alan released five consecutive singles in just five months. Each of which carries an elemental theme dirived from the “Godai”-the Japanese version of Buddhism’s classic elements. They are: Earth- “Natsukashii Mirai ~longing future~”, Sky- “Sora Uta”, Wind- “Kaze no Tegami”, Fire- “RED CLIFF -Shin Sen-“, and Water- “Megumi no Ame”. Also her so-called “Tibetan wail”, in which she is able to stretch her vocals for a long period of time at very high notes.

AUTHOR’S NOTE: I found alan being praised on my favorite J-Pop reviews blog- Beyond The Sea. I began listening to her singles chronologically and fell in love with each of her songs. alan’s voice is truly beautiful and her songs are wonderful and uniquely hers.

Hopefully we won’t have to wait too much longer for an album; rumors spell early ’09.

alan is so beautiful! I love her voice and she has a uniqueness about her that makes her an eye catcher. I’m glad to have embraced her music. I’m happy that you got me to listen to her. After a long day from work, it’s nice to listen to sweet relaxing music from alan. Her voice is out of this world. :)
