Artist Spotlight Log 7 – Do As Infinity

Do As Infinity is an amazing band in any regard. Actually, not much of a band per say… D.A.I. (as they are also proudly known as) is really only three main people: Tomiko Van is on vocals and writes lyrics with partner Ryo Owatari, who also plays guitar and sings backup vocals. They began and named their band after Dai Nagao , who worked at avex and was largely responsible for the band’s formation.

Dai Nagao: He was a member and composer of the popular musical group Do As Infinity from its founding until it disbanded in September 2005, although they have since reformed. Though sort of a behind the scenes member of the band later on, he did play live with the band full time when it first started, as an acoustic guitarist until about 2001. Then he would appear occasionally in a few concerts as a special guest, including the final live on November 25, 2005. Nagao is one of the very few Japanese artists that plays a custom double-neck acoustic guitar.

TAO became Do As Infinity‘s twentieth and last single, released on July 27, 2005. The lyrics of TAO described about friends parting ways and this caused many rumors among the fans about the disbanding of Do As Infinity. The band announced on September 14, 2005 that they would disband on September 29, 2005, exactly six years to the day since their first single, Tangerine Dream, was released. Their last concert was at the Nippon Budokan on November 25, 2005.

Tomiko Van, pursued a solo career. She debuted on March 29, 2006 with her album, Farewell. She released several singles, two cover albums, and a second album in 2008, Van.. Ryo Owatari, the guitarist, worked on his band, Missile Innovation, and released their first single on February 1, 2006.

The band announced they would officially reform on September 29, 2008 and would eventually embark on a nation wide tour once more to celebrate their reunion. (credit:Wikipedia)

I found the band as their single “Fukai Mori” (Deep Forest) was featured on the popular anime Inu Yasha, which I was watching at the time. This was late 2005, if I recall. I know it was after the band has disbanded, as many posters on the YUI-Lover forums were crying about the sad event. It was then when I decided to take a leap of faith. I purchased their A-side singles collection, Do The A-Side, and LOVED it! I was hooked on the band’s sound and even found a lyrics sight with complete translations of all their songs! Needless to say, the lyrics are beautiful. ^_^ Soon after I bought their B-sides collection album, and loved that too! It was late 2006 when I searched the net and dug up a complete discography. It took many hours, but I eventually heard every single D.A.I. song ever written. What a beautiful time. I’m VERY excited about their return!
